ET CETERA (ETC.)
We only use "et cetera" when the reader can imagine what is
next on the list.
Here are some examples of using "et cetera" properly:
The letters of the alphabet are a, b, c, d, etc. [everybody knows
what comes next]
He visited all the big cities of the world: London, Tokyo, Paris,
Bangkok, New Delhi, etc.
Here are some examples of using "et cetera" the wrong way
[WRONG because we can't imagine what comes next in the list]
What did you have for dinner? Oh, rice, misoshiru, etc.
What are your favorite sports? Mm, basketball, ping pong, etc.
AND SO ON
And so on is the same as etc.
We only use "and so on" when the reader can imagine what is
next on the list.
Since "and so on" and "etc." are the same,
we should never use them in the same sentence.
SUCH AS
We should try to use "such as" instead of "et
cetera" and "and so on"
Example: I like big cities such as Mexico City, Jakarta and Sydney.
